Slave 1 Ver. IV IN-DEPTH REVIEW by Shademan12Slave 1. Death Star and Millennium Falcon side, Slave 1 is one of the more iconic sstarships of the Old Trilogy. This fearsome ship is shown only in Empire Strikes Back and only in two scenes; the Cloud City scene and when the Millennium Falcon passed the Star Destroyer in the Asteroid field. Even from these brief two scenes, Slave 1 quickly, like its owner, grew in popularity and there have been three versions of this fearsome ship made. Today the fourth and current redesign of the classic ship arrived on my doorstep. I'm so excited that this review might end up being my most thorough review yet.
BOX: The box is big. The 2006 Slave 1 was about $50 and the box was roughly the size of a 1/100 scale gundam box (i.e. about the size of a standard year book). This set is about $30 more and the box is more. It is easily comparable to a computer CPU. On the front of the box is the picture you see in the description. On the back the various functions of the set are shown (more on those later, and three pictures of the other new sets this year. Also on the sides, there are tabs so the box can be resealed 'Tab A-into-Slot B' style.
BOX CONTENTS: Open the box and three large, clear plastic bags topple out along with two instruction booklets. If you think there is a mistake, you are wrong. That is right; it takes two instruction booklets to make this model. On the first pace of booklet 1 it shows that each back is a step. Bag 1 makes the minifigs, holds their items, and makes the base disc with firing mechanism. Bag 2 has the wings and main body. Finally, bag 3 holds the nose. Even though the windshield is pictured in bag 3's build, it is loose instead of in a bag. Also in the box you will find *gasp* stickers! It seems Lego has made the move to include stickers on their newer models. The stickers are not really needed but do add to the look.
MINIFIGS: Ah, one of the reasons this set is so expensive...
-BOBA FETT: What more is there to say about him? He is the greatest bounty hunter of all time. So to celebrate his 30th 'birthday,' lego has revamped the hunter's look. Previously to make Boba Fett you needed four basic pieces: Helmet/Jetpack, Black head, torso, legs. Now you need seven! Helmet, movable range-finder (antennae piece), Head, jetpack (SEPERATE FROM HELMET), Cape (kept in a white hard paper pocket to protect from bending during transportation), Torso with new print, and legs. Unfortunately, Boba Fett's limbs are void of decals once again (curse you Cloud City Boba Fett!)
The color for new-Boba Fett is a sandy green instead of the deep green normally seen (however, the chest decal is a darker green than the helmet and jetpack and also has a belt and wookie braid decal on).
My only beef with this new minifig is Boba Fett's face: Even though he doesn't look like the clones (thankfully), he is smiling... Granted he does have cuts on his face and a lovely five-o'clock shadow, Boba Fett is smiling... He doesn't smile ever. That aside, this minifig is a great redo and is more detailed than some 6" action figures!
-BOSSK: The Bounty hunter whose hatred of Boba Fett is as great as his strength, this Trandoshan bounty hunter makes his 'first' appearance in lego form. He was int he Lego star wars games, but he had a yellow variant of an x-wing pilots body. Now Bossk sports a unique look and lovely head-mold. Bossk's head is a true work of art. From the smooth horns on his head to his perfectly painted teeth, this figure really captures everything about the Lizard-like bounty hunter. The decal on the torso is also very detailed, front AND back. The front is printed, sure that makes sense, but the back? Yes and it is movie-accurate. Way to go, lego!
-HAN SOLO: Rounding out the trio is Boba Fett's prey, Han Solo. Not much is truly remarkable about Han except for the new torso. This is a rather wrinkly shirt design and shows his chest... including man-cleavage to hint at his buff physique. However, the real kicker is the HANSICLE. In the past sets with Han in Carbonite, affectionately called the 'Hansicle,' it was presented as a simple pillar-like black brick with a silver Han printed on the front (FYI that printing made Han a bit too tall Minifig-wise). Now it is a fully detailed piece. It is 3D and Minifig-scale! There are handle bars on the ends of the Hansicle and the sides have printings to resemble various buttons and graphs. The greatest feature? It gives Han something to do! On the underside there are two small bars sticking out. You can attach Captain Solo underneath the Hansicle so it is like he is actually frozen! Yay!
MISC: This kit comes with weapons (duh), but more than you would expect. It comes with two blasters: The long version and short version. However, it also comes with the items found in the Clone Walker battle pack: The waist kama (skirt), the plastic shoulder paudron (sp?), two blaster pistols, two missile things for a helmet, and the visor piece from the clone battle pack. All of these are in a gray color like Boba Fett's Range-finder.
BUILD: This is where the set disappoints a little bit. It is very reminiscent of the 2006 version. Some new builds such as the boarding ramp, wings, and guns. But overall the build is uninteresting if you have built the 2006 model. The colors though are really bright and match Boba Fett's chest decal color.
SHIP: Wonderful. The ship is aesthetically pleasing even if the build is too similar to the 2006 model (seriously, it's about the same size -_-). The guns are more movie-accurate (But should still be smaller), the boarding ramp looks better. The cargo hold on this model is UNDER the barding ramp instead of it BEING the boarding ramp as it was in 2006. The barding ramp in 2006 was short and thin and lifted up to hold the one-block Hansicle. But 2010 Hansicle is unique and gets a bigger space: the boarding ramp lifts up revealing a large space for it to neatly slide in and stay in place snuggly.
The cockpit is still the most uninteresting place on the ship. It is a 2x3 piece with one printed bar brick for controls. The Jango Slave 1 still has the best control scheme.
The color scheme on the ship screams 'Boba Fett.' It is random and shotty in a way, just like the movie. There are still the two large lockers just above the twin laser cannons on the nose for stuff but in it is a small trashcan thing that takes up all the room but doesn't fit any weapon. It is better to omit the can altogether.
In 2006 there were two big white missiles stored just above these two lockers that pointed down when deployed. Even though they looked funny pointing down, they were big. 2010 has brought to us the flick-fire missile system which replaces these two large missiles with two small pew-pews. A very cool-looking panel opens to reveal a complex arm mechanism that holds a flick fire missile (one on each side). The tips are trans-blue but are rather wimpy once the coolness of the arm is gone. It's great for a couple of flicks, but after that, you might want to make it into another holding cell for a bounty.
Also there are two smaller lockers below the nose again. 2006's small lockers were wide and blended withe the ship's outside. 2010 has ones that look small but are deep. Their doors also stick out from the ship just enough to give it a really cool personalized feel.
Of course this set comes with a complex firing mechanism just as the 2006 model. 2006 had the large cannon-like missile used in technic. 2010 delivers a complex flick fire system. This takes up the same area of the ship as the technic door-buster, but delivers four small, fast shots instead of one big one. Built like a small magazine, you push the back, middle thruster and out comes one missile. With that missile gone, the magazine shifts down one hole to the next missile instantly. Rather ingenious. However, I also took that play-feature out and made a mini bedroom for our homeless bounty hunter instead. As for the four missiles, i put two of them on the wing arms where there are holes that work perfectly fine as flick fire holders without looking ridiculous and put the other two on an empty hinge on the nose so they look like lights.
The underside of the dish (base) is still not detailed too much and is only movie-accurate if looking at the number of thrusters, but has more detail than 2006 and definitely more detailed than 2000's version.

If you look at all the cons and say "Woah, that's a lot," it's okay. Of those cons 4 of them can be remedied with just some imagination and bricks. There are so many reasons to get this kit. It looks great on display, it is sturdier than the 2006, Boba Fett is AMAZING, great minifig items, exclusive Bossk figure, and the Hansicle... Did I mention Boba Fett? If you already have the 2006 as aren't realy a Star Wars fan, you don't have to get it but here are a list of reasons to get this set:

There you have it; this is a great kit for a friend and fan of lego, Fan of star wars, fan of Boba Fett, Kids, or collectors. Unlike some Lego sets, this Slave 1 is great for displaying and is as smooth as it is beautiful. A true 10/10 and a must-have!
